Italian Tubular Cast On & Italian Tubular Bind Off -- Saturday, September 6, 11:00-noon
Many knitting patterns use this lovely cast on and bind off. They create matching edges when used together. Both create an edge that looks seamless, especially when used with a one-by-one ribbed fabric. In this hour, learn these techniques so you are ready for your next knitting project.
Row 1: (K1, P1) across the row.
Repeat Row 1 seven times.
Additional Supplies: A 24" or 32" US 7 circular knitting needle. Your bind off swatch (as described above) should NOT be on this needle, as we will begin the class with the cast on, requiring a free needle.
Reading Charts in Knitting -- Sunday, September 7, 2:00-3:00 -- SOLD OUT
Getting comfortable reading charts in your knitting patterns can really open up your knitting world. Reading charts can save lots of mistakes. Lace, mosaic, and stranded colorwork patterns become so much simpler once you are comfortable reading charts!
No homework, but you may bring a chart that you would like to decipher if time allows.
Button Holes and Buttons -- Sunday, September 14, 2:00-3:00
Try a couple of different buttonhole options for your knitted project and learn a few ways to attach buttons to your project.
Homework -- Please knit the following 2 swatches for class:
Swatch 1:
Cast on 20 stitches.
Row 1: (K2, P2) across the row.
Repeat Row 1 four more times. Place this swatch on hold.
Swatch 2:
Cast on 24 stitches.
Row 1: (K2, P2) 3 times, (K1, P1) 6 times.
Row 2: (K1, P1) 6 times, (K2, P2) 3 times.
Repeat Rows 1 & 2 two more times, then Row 1 one more time. You will use this swatch first in class, so keep it ready to go on your needles.
Short Rows -- Saturday, September 20, 11:00-noon
Learn the basics of two popular short row techniques: the Wrap and Turn method and the German Short Row method. Learn them both and then decide which you would like to use in your project. You will no longer have to feel intimidated by any knit pattern using short rows!
Homework:
Cast on 20 sttiches.
Rows 1-4: Knit.
Row 5: Purl.
Row 6: Knit.
Row 7: Purl.
Please bring this swatch to class on your needles and ready to go.
Crochet Charts -- Sunday, September 21, 2:00-3:00
Have you ever noticed how wordy crochet instructions can be? Simplify your pattern reading life by learning how to read crochet charts!
No homework, but you can bring a crochet chart of your own for us to look at if time allows.
Using Double Pointed Knitting Needles -- Saturday, September 27, 11:00-noon
Ok, it’s time to put aside your prejudice against the double pointed knitting needles. DPNs are without a doubt the most flexible type of knitting needles for knitting in the round. Learn more about these ever so useful tools!
No homework, but knitters will need to bring a set of five DPNs in either size US 6, 7 or 8.
Blocking -- Saturday, October 4, 11:00-noon
To make great knit and crochet projects, we start with blocking and end with blocking. Learn good habits for blocking your knit and crochet gauge swatches and finished projects. Discover several helpful tools and techniques for successful blocking.
No homework.
Quick Fixes -- Sunday, October 5, 2:00-3:00
Accidents happen! Understand how to get your knitting back on the needles correctly and how to fix some of the problems that happen as you work through your project.
Homework:
Cast on 24 sttiches.
Rows 1-3: Knit.
Row 4: Knit.
Row 5: K12, P12.
Repeat rows 4 & 5 two more times.
Row 10: K7, P1, K10, P1, Knit to end.
Row 11: K12, P12.
Row 12: Knit.
Row 13: K12, P12.
Repeat Rows 12 & 13 two more times.
Row 18: Knit.
Row 19: P5, purl one stitch wrapping clockwise instead of counterclockwise, P7, purl one stitch wrapping clockwise instead of counterclockwise, P6, purl one stitch wrapping clockwise instead of counterclockwise, knit to the end.
Leave this swatch on your knitting needle.
*On the last row of this swatch we are setting up a couple of mistakes by wrapping the yarn around the right hand needle when forming a stitch in the opposite direction that we usually wrap)
Additional Supplies: Cocoknits Stitch Fixer and a small DPN (US 5 or smaller)
Crochet Foundation Stitches -- Sunday, October 12, 2:00-3:00
It can be tricky to make a nice edge working into a crochet chain. Learn how to make a nice elastic edge together with your first row of work for lots of crochet projects using foundation stitches.
Materials: Please bring a 4.5 or 5.0 mm crochet hook to class.
Weaving In Ends -- Saturday, October 18, 11:00-noon
Learn the preferred way to weave in the ends of your completed projects. With this method, your ends will never come out!
Homework:
Cast on 20 stitches.
Rows 1-12: Knit.
Row 13: Knit.
Row 14: Purl.
Repeat rows 13 and 14 four times.
Row 23: (K2, P2) to the end. Repeat this row 4 times.
Bind off in pattern.
Saturday, November 1 -- TWO SESSIONS:
Continental Knitting for Throwers, 11:00-noon
There are lots of great reasons to learn different ways to knit! Knitting with two colors, and giving your hands a rest are just two. Learn to knit “the other way!”
Homework: Students will cast on 30 stitches in any cast on method and work garter stitch for approximately one inch. Work will be left on the needle so we are ready to work!
