Rhinebeck Sweater KAL 2022

Rhinebeck Sweater KAL 2022

Posted by Maya Gooding on May 24th 2022

If you're like us, you're excited for the Rhinebeck Sheep & Wool Festival 24/7, 365. We love people-watching, and seeing all of the amazing finished (and sometimes, almost-finished) pieces that people wear around the grounds.

This year, we thought it'd be a jazzy idea to get together a group of eager folks like us who want to KAL (knit-along) our own choice for a Rhinebeck sweater! It's always fun to work alongside others making the same project - work through issues collectively, get inspired by color choices, and just have a great time doing something communal with nice people!

We took our voting from a big group of staff favorites, and narrowed it down to four choices: Zola Jacket by Ambah O'Brien, Rowlock by Norah Gaughan, Wetherell by Kiyomi Burgin, and Gr8 Gingham Raglan by Jessie Mae. We took a vote in our newsletter and let you choose your favorite of the four, and you decided on... (drum roll please)... Gr8 Gingham Raglan! And don't worry, the other three most definitely aren't losers - we've stuck them firmly in our queue to make at a later date.

To join this free KAL, all we ask is you purchase your yarn from our shop! Click here to learn more about how the KAL works.

You can also stop by and see Maya's completed version in person - she was a test knitter for the design when it was first published. Though she didn't make her first version with store yarn, she will be joining along our KAL and making one from the endless possibilities we've got in stock!

Gr8 Gingham Raglan - finished garment measurements: (36.5, 40, 43.5) 47.5, 51, 54.5 {58, 62, 65.5}“, with suggested 3-9" positive ease.

This pattern looks great in many combinations of colors, and different styles of yarn. There are options in the pattern for short sleeves, long sleeves, and different body lengths, so we think there's a combination there for everyone! It also works with a variety of weights, due to personal gauge differing for everybody (for example Maya's version was done in a DK-weight). Below are just a few suggestions of combinations we like as a jumping-off point for you to decide on your own combo!

For a version with color-shifting yarn (like the designer's original, above), we would suggest using Schoppel Edition 3 paired with a solid-colored yarn like Hudson Highlands SportMalabrigo Arroyo, or Feederbrook BFL.

For a more solid version (like Maya's version, above), we would suggest using Feederbrook BFL or Hudson Highlands Sport or DK. Feeling a little summery? Try The Fibre Co. Luma!

Not feeling any of those options? We're here to help, so let us know and we can find your perfect (yarn) match!

If you are planning to add extra length, you could possibly need more yarn than is recommended here, so please keep that in mind.

A note about superwash yarn: due to the treatment of superwash fibers, when blocked, they will not naturally "fill in" or bloom the way non-superwash wools would. Blocking a stranded colorwork project can hide a multitude of tensioning sins, so if you are feeling unsure or uncomfortable about your tension, we would suggest using a non-superwash yarn like Feederbrook BFL. If you'd like to practice your tension (and check gauge) for your project before starting on the sweater, we'd suggest making Jessie's Gr8 Gingham Hat first.
